In
the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of people were arrested
for "crimes" related to caring for the basic needs of themselves and
their families. New Orleanians with charges such as public intoxication
and trespassing spent nearly a year in prison. Some still remain behind
bars awaiting charges. Others are out of prison, but still await court
appearances. Still others have a conviction on their record—damaging
their present and future opportunities for jobs, housing, and education.
In
the spirit of healing and reconciliation, the faith community is coming
together on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at 7PM at the Ashe' Cultural
Center, 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. (at Euterpe) to discuss a
faith-based appeal for forgiveness on behalf of the many New Orleanians
whose cases were affected by the storm. Please ask your place of
worship, your organization, your school and your community to come and
be a part of this dialogue on an important and pressing issue in the
New Orleans area. Some of the issues to be discussed include:
Working for amnesty for those who were arrested for taking care of themselves,
Helping those already in the system whose cases were affected by Katrina
Demanding that all records of criminalization be permanently erased
