The Fishermen and Concerned Citizens of Plaquemines Parish

The Fishermen and Concerned Citizens Association of Plaquemines Parish (FCCA) formed in 1979 around a law that banned the use of the small hand dredge by fishermen. The organization fought against the policy that discouraged self-employment of African American fishermen and often forced them to work at cheaper wages on larger boats.

The FCCA was instrumental in obtaining running water in the town of Ironton, LA, as well as the return of oil-rich spillway land that had been appropriated from residents by the local levee board since 1929.
