SF Bayview

The mission of the San Francisco Bay View National Black Newspaper is to inform, enlighten and inspire the Black community locally and globally, to build unity within the community and solidarity with other communities. As the nation’s most influential, most exciting, most talked-about Black newspaper, the Bay View is the very best way to reach the African American community.

Ranked one of the top 10 Black papers in the country, the Bay View has long been the most popular Black paper in the San Francisco Bay Area. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! dubbed it “California’s leading African American newspaper.” The paper was founded by Muhammad al-Kareem in 1976, Willie Ratcliff became the publisher in 1992, and the Bay View celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006.

Testifying to the Bay View’s popularity is the ever-growing multitude who read the paper on the web, at www.sfbayview.com, where hits are running 2 million per month. Why so many? Cutting-edge coverage of issues people feel passionate about.

That coverage has made the Bay View an unprecedented award winner:

  • Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism Award in 1996
  • National Black Newspaper of the Year for 1997-98 from the National Black Chamber of Commerce
  • Best of the Bay: Best Newspaper for 1998-99 from the Bay Guardian, the Bay Area’s largest weekly
  • Media Alliance Investigate ’98 Award
  • New California Media 1999 Special Citation for Outstanding News Coverage
  • National Newspaper Publishers Association 1999 Award for Best Editorial Cartoon
  • National Newspaper Publishers Association 2001 Second Place Award for Best Editorial
  • Media Alliance Best Community Newspaper 2001
  • Best of the Bay: Local Hero 2003 from the Bay Guardian to Bay View publisher Willie Ratcliff
  • Society of Professional Journalists James Madison Freedom of Information Award in 2004

The Bay View’s outspoken advocacy for the African American community inspires our readers to turn information into action. On issue after issue, when the Bay View takes a stand, the community follows through and the mission is accomplished.

The Bay View is the best way to capture African American loyalty and buying power, because the Bay View is the paper people trust.
